MSI Testify before UN Rapporteur on Adequate Housing

IMG-20160419-WA0007Ms Leilani Farha , the United Nations Rapporteur on housing is on her periodical visit to India . She met activists on varied issues related to adequate housing from the southern states on 18th April at Bangalore. While D Gopi, HRN Advisory Committee Member from Vijayawada presented the cases of those displaced by the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, Pragada Vasu, our activist in Visakhapatnam presented the cases of eviction and homeless people in the city. Varghese Theckanath, Director MSI presented the cases of those affected by the special economic zones in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana. He also presented the situation of slum dwellers in Hyderabad. He demanded that the right to adequate housing is made a fundamental right in the Constitution. The UN Rapporteur will meet the government officials and other stake holders during her 11 day visit. She will prepare her final report by the end of the year to be presented to the OHCHR.
